Abstract

Despite the potential production of sweet pepper in the savanna region of Nigeria, the yield obtained by the small-scale farmers are often very low due to various production constraints such as soil fertility, production practices, cost and unavailability of inorganic fertilizer etc. Field experiments were conducted in two locations; the Teaching and Research Farm of Bayero University Kano (BUK) (latitude 11058 N, longitude 8025 E) and Kadawa village Irrigation scheme, Bunkure local government Kano state (latitude 11o42 N, longitude 8o 33 E,). The aim of the experiments was to evaluate the performance of three cultivars of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) (Tattasai Dan Damasak, Yolo Wonder and Nsukka yellow) under varying levels of poultry manure (0-ton ha-1, 1 ton ha-1, 2 tons ha-1 and 3 tons ha-1). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), replicated four times. The parameters assessed include plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, days to 50% flowering, number of fruits per plant, fruit yield per hectare and capsaicin content. Data collected was subjected to Analysis of variance [ANOVA] using Genstat [17th edition]. Student’s New Man’s Kuel (SNK) was used to separate the treatment means. Result indicated that the growth, yield and capsaicin parameters were significantly affected in all the three tested sweet pepper cultivars using the varying levels of poultry manure. Dan Damasak proved to be the highest yielding variety at both locations (10063 kg ha-1 at Bunkure and 9861 kg ha-1 at BUK). Application of 3 tons ha-1 resulted in higher sweet pepper yield (15160 kg ha-1). Nsukka yellow produced the highest capsaicin content while the highest capsaicin content (19.833 mg kg-1) was also recorded when 3 tons ha-1 of poultry manure was applied. Dan Damasak interacted favourably with 3 tons ha-1 of poultry manure to produce the highest fresh fruit yield ha-1 (15160 kg). And Nsukka yellow interacted favourably with 3 tons ha-1 of poultry manure to produce the highest capsaicin content (22.23 mg kg-1). Therefore 3 tons ha-1 is recommended in the study area.
