Abstract
The study assessed the determinants of food security status among farming households in Ardo-kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedures were used to select 133 respondents for this study. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential Statistics. The results of the study revealed that the average age of household heads was 43 years and majority (82.0%) were married with mean household size of 7 persons. Also, farming household heads in the study area had one form of education or the other with mean farming experience of 15 years and farming (78.9%) was the major source of income. The results further showed that farming households earned an average of N42,745 per month and 60.2% of the farming households obtained their farmland through inheritance with average farm size of 3.5 hectares. The result further showed that about 38.3% of the respondents were food secured while 61.7% were found to be food insecured. The average food security indices for the secured and insecured households were given as 1.60 and 0.84 respectively. Moreover, the results showed that household size (p≤0.01; z = -2.91), farming experience (p≤0.01; z = 4.38) and farm size (p≤0.05; 1.96) were significant determinants of the food security status of the farming households. The average daily calorie consumption for food secured and food insecured households were 3620kcal and 1891kcal respectively. Diversification of economic activities, review of land use decree and effective household size management should be encouraged in the study area.
