Abstract
This review was conducted to assess the ways of identifying and classifying forages in pasture and rangelands. Forages in pasture and rangeland can be sampled using quadrat method and to help in identifying the collected species, representative plants with flowering head and other vegetative parts from each species can be collected, coded and dried in presses. Following drying, the specimens can be mounted. Some common species can be identified right in the field using local or common names, while botanical names of most of these forage species can be identified using Blench or in herbariums of different institutions. Generally, pasture and rangeland forages can be identified by botanical, common and local names, while classification can be achieved based on forage type (grass, sedge, legume, forb, tree or shrub), family (poaceae, cyperaceae, fabaceae, others), life form or duration (annuals, biennials, perennials), and preference or utilizations by grazing animals (decreasers, increasers, invaders).
